Cross-Country Teams Capture CIS Gold Medals, Western Win Yates Cup

The University of Guelph entered the record books this weekend, becoming the first school in history to win back-to-back team gold medals in both women's and men's cross-country running at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) championships.
Both teams turned in dominating performances at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria Saturday, and rookie Lindsay Carson won the women’s individual title. Head coach Dave Scott-Thomas won Coach of the Year.
When the U of G teams won last year, it was the first time in 12 years that one school left the CIS championships with both gold medals.
It is the third straight CIS victory for the women’s team. Carson, a first-year biomedical engineering student, captured the gold medal in the women's five-kilometre race with a time of 17:41.3. She left the championship with both the CIS female athlete-of-the-year and rookie-of-the-year awards. Teammates Rachel Cliff, Shantelle Novak and Jess Vanhie were seventh, eighth and 10th respectively.
The Guelph men, winners of six of the last nine championships, scored 59 points to distance OUA arch-rivals, the Windsor Lancers (79) by 20 points. Windsor had claimed four straight men's banners before Guelph ended its
title run in 2006.
On the men's side, Matt Brunsting earned fourth place, and teammates Kyle Boorsma, this season's Ontario University Athletics individual champion, and Joe Brunsting were seventh and 10th respectively.
In CIS cross-country, the top seven finishers are named to the first all-Canadian team, and those who finish eighth through 14th are on the second squad.
Scott-Thomas was named both women's and men's coach of the year for the second straight season. He won the women's award for the third year in a row and fourth time overall, and now has six Fred Foot Awards as men's coach of the year.
In football, the University of Western Ontario defeated the Guelph Gryphons 34-21 before a boisterous standing-room crowd of 8,500 at Guelph's Alumni Stadium to win the 100th Yates Cup.
The Gryphons finished the season 6-3 overall, and played in their first Yates Cup since 1996. The Mustangs advance to the CIS semi-final Mitchell Bowl, which will be held Nov. 17.
